Instructions for Removing/Retiring a Mac Device

Instructions for Removing/Retiring a Mac Device

Step 1: Remove the Device from the Jamf Pro Console

To cleanly retire the Mac and ensure the Jamf management framework is removed, follow these steps:

  1. Send a Remote Wipe Command: * Locate the target Mac in your Jamf Pro console.
    • Send a remote Wipe Device command to the device.
  2. Wait for Processing: * Allow the device to receive and execute the command. This process automatically removes the Jamf management agent from the Mac.
  3. Delete the Record: * Once the wipe is successfully processed, delete the device object entirely from Jamf Pro.

Step 2: Release the Device from Apple School Manager (ASM)

If the device is being surplused, auctioned, or permanently disposed of, you must release it from your automated enrollment pipeline so it does not prompt for University enrollment during its next setup.

  1. Look Up the Serial Number: * Log into Apple School Manager (ASM).
    • Search for the device using its unique serial number.
  2. Release the Device: * If the Mac is present in ASM, select it and choose Release Device.
    • Note: This ensures that if the device is auctioned or sold, it is no longer tied to the University of Florida, allowing the new owner to set it up as a personal machine.

⚠️ Important: Releasing a device from ASM is a permanent action for non-participating institutions. Make sure the device is truly intended for surplus or disposal before finalizing the release.
