What is Webex Phone?
Webex Phone is UF’s softphone solution that provides telephone services via a software client on your computer or mobile. It allows you to make and receive calls from your assigned UF business telephone number, as well as providing access to your voicemail.
How Do I get Webex Phone?
For new softphone service requests, please submit a ticket.
I am currently using Jabber. Do I need Webex Phone?
Webex Phone is the new softphone client at the University of Florida, and all Cisco Jabber softphones will be disabled after Dec. 19, 2025.
If you're currently running Cisco Jabber, contact your local IT support to obtain the Webex client. Once installed, you should start using the Webex client.
Do I need to uninstall Jabber?
Both clients can be installed simultaneously on mobile and desktop devices, allowing you to smoothly transition to Webex.
Once you are familiar with the Webex client and added your contacts, you should proceed to uninstall the Jabber client.
Will WebEx have all of my contacts and settings from Jabber?
Contacts are not imported from Jabber and you will need manually to recreate your contacts.
Do I have to have WebEx running to receive calls?
Yes, the Webex app must always be running to receive calls. This is also the case when using the Teams Plugin.
How do I use Webex Phone?

Can I make 911 calls with Webex Phone?
Do not use Webex Phone to place 911 emergency calls at this time. Please use your mobile phone to make 911 calls.
- Webex Phone currently routes all 911 calls to the Alachua County PSAP, regardless of where the calling device may be located.
A new service that will allow 911 emergency from desktop softphone clients will be available by January 2026.
Do I need to use the VPN or be on a UF network to use WebEx?
No, the VPN client is not required. Jabber works inside and outside of UF, with or without the UF VPN.
However, you may need to use the VPN to use client to use it in conjunction with other UF applications, such as the Finesse Contact Center application.
Can I use other Webex features like Meetings and Chat?
The University of Florida licensing agreement only provides Basic Meeting licenses, which limit video meetings to 40 minutes and a maximum of 100 participants.
- For longer or larger video meetings, please use a UF licensed meeting service such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams
While you may use additional features like messaging and calendaring, the primary purpose of Webex at UF is to serve as a softphone client for telephone services
Webex Phone Issues
This is my first time using Webex and cannot login.
Your Active Directory account is likely not in the correct Organizational Unity. Your Department IT support can verify the location, or your can open a support request with the Communications Support team.
I am signed-in to Webex, but I don't have telephone services.
You must have a personal telephone number and it must be configured for softphone services. Please open a support request with the Communications Support team.
My Webex phone service was working before but it has now stopped.
If your phone services stop working or show a status of 'connecting', please restart the client.
If restarting the client doesn't resolve the issue, select the Sign Out option from the menu, and sign in again.
