Voice Over IP (VOIP)

What is VoIP Telephony?

Voice-over-IP (VoIP) represents a new method of providing telephone service. Historically, telephone systems have used dedicated equipment to provide only telephone service. The equipment includes telephone switches, circuits to connect the switches, telephone sets, and so forth. Rather than using dedicated equipment, IP Telephony will use much of the same infrastructure as a data network. It will achieve this by converting sound into small packets of data and transporting them via the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) between telephone sets.

What telephone endpoints (handsets) are available?

UFIT supports a wide range of telephony endpoints, including multiple-line devices, video-phones, key expansion-modules, and conference units. A list of the latest supported devices can be found here: Device List

Can I use third party SIP devices?

Third party devices normally provide only the most basic telephony functions (e.g. dial, answer, disconnect), but fail to support a full range of features (transfer, multiple lines, conferencing, etc).

If you have a specific need that is not being met by any of the current offerings, please open a support request with the UFIT Help Desk and the UC team will contact you to explore alternatives and solutions.

Legacy analog handsets can still be used with a Cisco Analog telephone Adapter (ATA) However, the functionality of analog handsets is limited and does not support all the features of VoIP handsets.

Payment

The payment of all telephone devices are the responsibility of the requesting department. This includes new, broken, device upgrades and phones no longer service supported
